Hypoallergenic

An estimated six million Americans suffer from allergies to cats.  Contrary to popular belief, most of these allergies are not directly due to a cat’s hair or dander.  Instead, the true cause is believed to be a glyco-protein known as Fel D1.  This protein is produced by the sebaceous glands and is found in the skin, saliva, and urine.  Since cats are notorious groomers, the saliva dries on the fur, and because the protein is several times lighter than air it floats throughout the cats home.  Once the particles become airborne, they are free to land on flooring and furniture which we humans come into frequent contact.  Once touched or inhaled, an allergic reaction may be triggered.

Some research has shown that Siberian cats, for reasons still unknown, naturally produce about 99.7% less Fel D1 protein than other cats.  Less Fel D1 means that Siberians provoke less allergic reactions, thus they are considered by many to be hypoallergenic.  There are countless testimonials on the internet from cat allergy sufferers which found that Siberians do not trigger an allergic response.

The hypoallergenic qualities of the Siberian are what originally attracted us to the breed.  Our daughter desperately wanted a kitten, but her severe allergies to cats prohibited us from getting her one.  When we discovered a Siberian breeder by chance one day, we were skeptical, to say the least, of the hypoallergenic claim.  To our amazement, she did not experience a reaction from the kitten.  That kitten became the first of our many Siberians.

Please remember, Siberian cats are hypoallergenic, not "non allergenic". We can not guarantee that you will not have an allergic reaction to a Siberian. However, in our experience, allergy sufferers are fine with our cats. If allergies are an issue, please visit a Siberian cattery to be sure this is the breed for you. Ideally, you should spend time with the mother of the kitten you wish to purchase.

As breeders of Siberians, it is our primary goal to place our kittens into loving environments.  We get the greatest pleasure from placing kittens in homes which could not have cats due to someone in that family having an allergy.  Because of the joy that our Siberians have brought to our children, it is especially rewarding for us if we can help put a smile on a child’s face by placing our kittens in homes with kids.
